Managing livestock

“Streams and Wetlands: Living with Livestock Near Water,” the first of four workshops, will meet from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, at the Land Trust Building.

Islanders will learn how to design a stream or wetland native plant restoration plan, calculate the length and cost of an exclusion fence to keep animals out of aquatic areas, select native plants suited to aquatic buffers and outline a maintenance plan.

Laughter for health

A free Laugh for the Health of It class will meet from 2 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Island Yoga Center.

Year-round gardening

“How to Grow All Your Own Produce in Two and a Half Years: An (r)Evolution Disguised as Organic Gardening” will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at Vashon Cohousing, 10421 S.W. Bank Rd.

In the Maritime Northwest, it is possible to grow all our own food year-round with limited time to establish a system and limited effort.

Marisha Auerbach invites Islanders to visit her garden through slides and philosophy. She will discuss how people can work towards self-reliance in produce if they have property to work with as well as guerrilla tactics to grow more food and flowers on Vashon Island.

As petroleum becomes more expensive, fruits, vegetables and other goods will become increasingly more expensive to transport into residential areas. This workshop offers an opportunity to create cultural change through gardening.

The cost is $7 to $10 on a sliding scale.

Singing

Sarah Christine will lead a voice empowering singing workshop from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, at Joan Hanna’s studio on Point Robinson Road.

The group will work with breath techniques, body awareness and movement to release tension and create clear channels for the voice to flow freely. Through a variety of songs, participants will harmonize, tone and improvise their way to a stronger and more powerful voice.No singing experience is necessary, and all abilities are welcome.

Yoga

Yoga Nidra at Island Yoga Center will meet from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Thursdays, Oct. 30 to Dec. 11.

Yoga Nidra is an ancient form of guided meditation that teaches how to integrate profound relaxation and self-awareness into our lives.

Each class includes gentle movement as preparation for Yoga Nidra, which is experienced in a reclined position.

Buddhist meditation

Karma Thegsum Choling Seattle, a Tibetan Buddhist meditation group will host a weekend retreat led by Lama Kathy Wesley on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 1 and 2.

The retreat is called “Enlightened Qualities of the Heart: A Teaching on the Six Perfections.” The Six Perfections or “paramitas” are generosity, ethics, patience, joyous effort, meditation and wisdom and each of these six are within us.

Over the course of three talks, with time for both meditation practice and discussion, Lama Kathy will cover indepth the practice of each of the Six Perfections.

The retreat will be held at 26514 94th Ave. S.W. The weekend includes three sessions. The cost is $20 per session for members and $25 for non-members.
