WIC program
The Women, Infants and Children food program (WIC) provides free vouchers for nutritious foods as well as nutrition education for qualifying low-income pregnant and breastfeeding women, infants and children up to age 5. The clinic is held the third Wednesday of every month from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 2:30 p.m. This month the date is today, Jan. 21.
The clinic is located at the Vashon Methodist Church, 17928 Vashon Hwy. S.W. For appointments, call 296-4822.

An encore event in support of Vashon’s Wolftown will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, at the Quartermaster Pub at the Back Bay Inn. For more information, call the Back Bay Inn at 463-5355.

Western storytelling
Books by the Way will host Island buckaroos wearing their best duds for a Western story time and sing-along at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 24.

Backbone puppets
The Backbone Campaign will host a puppet work party from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 25, at the Sheffield Building.
People can help with with papier mache, sewing, building or banner- making. The group will be helping to get the puppets, truck and crew ready for a cross-country tour.
Food and drinks will be provided. Dress warmly. Call 408-8058 to RSVP and for directions.
Drumming circle
A community drumming circle, open to all drummers, will gather from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 25, at the Common House at Vashon Cohousing, 10421 S.W. Bank Rd.
It will be facilitated improvisation/freestyle drumming and percussion led by drummer extraordinaire Geoff Johns. All are welcome.
Organizers say the event will be fun for all levels of drumming experience. A $5 donation is suggested, but no one will be turned away. Bring your drums and percussion instruments. Feast for the Soul
Jacqui Lown will offer a crystal bowl ceremony as part of the Winter Feast for the Soul program under way. The gathering will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 26, at the Land Trust Building.
It will be an experience of sound and stillness and is the second in a series of community events sharing ways Islanders practice peace.

Great Books
The Great Books discussion group will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2, at the Vashon Library.
The Great Books Group has been meeting at the Vashon Library for 30 years. All interested Islanders are invited to join the group for stimulating discussions once a month.
This month the group will discuss “Distributive Justice” from “Collected Papers” by John Rawls. Call the library for more information at 463-2069.
Book club
Stranger Than Fiction, Vashon’s newest book store, has begun a book group called Roll’n & Scroll’n. It will meet the first Tuesday of every month at 6 p.m.; in February, the date is Feb. 3.

Youth-Adult Dialogue
The next Youth-Adult Dialogue will meet from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, for “Sex: What’s Love Got to Do With It?” The dialogues provide a lighthearted space for different generations to talk with each other.
There’s a free dinner. Please bring your own plate and utensils. And youth who participate get a coupon that’s good at Movie Magic for a movie or a drink.

Storytelling benefit
The Vashon Wilderness Program will host a story telling event at Havurat Ee Shalom from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7. The event is a fundraiser to provide scholarships for children to be able to participate in this unique outdoor mentoring program.
The event will encompass the tradition and cultural aspects of storytelling in an effort to revitalize storytelling in our community.

High school tours
Tours of Vashon High School will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. every Wednesday through Feb. 2, and from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan 24.
All tours meet in the Vashon High School gym foyer, and all Islanders are welcome to take the tour, particularly those weighing their votes on the proposed bond issue for a new school.

Tax help
Hilary Emmer will help people with their taxes, property tax exemptions and applications for Basic Health at the Vashon Libary from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursdays. Jan. 29 to April 2.
Her tax assistance is free for people who make less than $25,000 a year.
