A Vashon flag is chosen 

The most recent contest to choose an official Vashon flag wrapped up last month at Two Wall Gallery. The design that garnered the most viewer votes was submitted by Adria Magrath, who also won the contest last year. Magrath’s flag incorporates a black fir tree with a red bicycle centered on a field of yellow, green and blue bars. Greg Wessel, who organized the competition, said that it is possible that actual flags, emblazoned with the design, might be be manufactured at some point in the near future. No future competitions are planned.

Garden tour is coming up 

Vashon Allied Arts’ 21st annual Vashon Island Garden Tour will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, June 25 and 26. The tour will include walks in six private Island gardens as well as seminars, live music and a garden’s market. Tour tickets are $25 per person. Sip some wine at Luna 

Vashon Winery’s Ron Irvine will host a wine tasting from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, June 10, at Café Luna. Irvine offers four wines for $10, with tastings happening at the taster’s own pace. For more information, visit www.vashonwineclub.org.  

Attend a play reading  

A free dramatic reading of “Atticus,” a new play adapted by Rev. Marc Powell from a novel by New York Times best-selling author Ron Hansen, will take place at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 18, at St. John Vianney Church. The event is a potluck, and attendees are encouraged to bring a Mexican dish or any other offering of food, to the reading. Powell is the pastor of St. John Vianney Church, and “Atticus” is the second Island theater production he has been involved with in the past year. His last stage adaptation — a retelling of two Susan Vreeland short stories — was produced as a part of Vashon Allied Arts’ “New Works” series in March. Later this year, “Atticus” will also get a production at the Blue Heron, but first, Powell is hoping to get feedback on his script at events like Saturday’s potluck.
