Construction on a wastewater pump station by the Fauntleroy Ferry Terminal, scheduled to begin early this summer and end in 2015, is expected to disrupt ferry traffic.

Today one ferry lane will be closed until 4 p.m. as cables are installed in anticipation of the project.

King County officials said in a press release that the Barton Pump Station, located underground immediately north of the Fauntleroy Ferry Terminal, is 50 years old and in need of an upgrade in order to accommodate West Seattle’s growing population.

In the release outlining the project, officials say residents and ferry commuters should expect to see heavy equipment, truck traffic and construction noise by the terminal. There will also be ferry lane closures and limited beach access at the dock.

Typical work hours for the project will be from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. The county is working with Washington State Ferries to minimize disruption to traffic along Fauntleroy Way and at the ferry terminal entrance. Traffic in and out of the project will be timed to avoid the busiest ferry travel times, a flagger will be provided to move construction vehicles, and someone will direct traffic in and out of the ferry terminal when needed.

A 24-hour construction hotline will be provided for the public to record comments on the project at 296-2999.

A pre-construction public meeting will be held today at 6:30 p.m. at the Fauntleroy Church. County staff will discuss the project’s timeline and impacts on West Seattle residents and ferry riders.
