The Island will be jumping this weekend with a wealth of bands storming the stages all over Vashon.
In addition to the usual roster of shows at Red Bicycle Bistro and Café Luna, the second annual Vashon Island Music Festival will be held at Agren Park on Saturday and Sunday.
Pick your favorites, and enjoy a full season of music packed into two short summer days and nights.
Vashon Island Music Festival at Agren
Agren Park will be the setting for the Vashon Island Music Festival.
The festival, now in its second year, is produced by local promoter Ruben Arnot of Rez1 Productions.
The festival will take place from noon to dusk, July 25 and 26, at Agren Park. Seventeen musical acts ranging from rock to blues, will perform. The festival has a special focus on Island musicians.
Saturday’s roster, in order of appearance, is John Browne, Yes Mam, Stony Beach, Dune Viper, Steelscape, Grimus, Doily Brothers, Murgatroyd and Scatter Gun.
On Sunday, the lineup includes John Browne, Tribal Voices, Turner Down, Resonance, Radio Daddio, Old Dockton, Subconscious Population and Trolls Cottage.
Admission to the fest is $15 at the gate, or $10 with a donation for the food bank.
The Red Bike pedals reggae and jazz
The Red Bicycle Bistro & Sushi will be full of soul this weekend, as reggae and jazz acts bring the restaurant’s small stage to life.
On Friday, July 24, the Katrina Wible Jazz Quartet will stir up the joint with a smoky, sultry sound.
Katrina Wible, who has been compared to Norah Jones and Diana Krall, performed at the Red Bicycle last March, but this time, she has a trio of talented jazz musicians in tow — Tim Kennedy on piano, Birch Periera on bass and Adam Kessler on drums.
Wible’s repertoire includes jazz standards, ’70s funk and popular R&B.
The free show is all-ages from 8:30 p.m. to 11 p.m., after which the event is for those 21 and older only.
At 9:30 p.m. Saturday, July 25, an all-star reggae cast will play a free show at the Bike for those 21 and older.
The Adrian Xavier Band features artists who infuse reggae music with elements of world fusion, folk, soul, jazz and even hip hop in live performances.
There will also be a free, all-ages show at 7 p.m. Sunday, July 26, by Greg Parrott and Frank Hein, who will perform an evening dubbed “Great Rain & Change.” The duo will perform with a few surprise guests.
A Texas-bred singer stops at Luna
Russell Clepper will play a free show at Café Luna at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 25.
Clepper, who is a native of Lubbock, Texas, now lives in Quebec City. His musical influences include gospel, bluegrass and folk music.
San Antonio music critic Jim Beal describes Clepper’s work as “authentic hand-made music.”
Known in his native state as a “lyricist’s lyricist,” Clepper has won praise as a songwriter who paints vivid images that are woven into stories drawn from his life and travels not only in Texas, but in Canada as well.
