An internationally acclaimed performer, Iman Lizarazu, performed two weekends ago on the Island as part of the Moisture Festival, and she and her audiences had such a good time what she will return for another show at Open Space for Arts & Community this weekend.

David Godsey, the founder of Open Space, is excited about Lizarazu’s encore performance.

“This is an amazing performer to see — a rare treat for Islanders of all ages,” Godsey said. “So when she asked to bring her full-length solo show out to Vashon while she was still in Seattle, of course we said yes.”

Lizarazu, a resident of Santa Cruz who is a classically trained ballet dancer, mime and circus clown, has a fascinating resumé.

Her life, said Godsey, “reads like a character from a fanciful French fable.”

She’s a photographer, painter, conceptual artist and vaudeville performer. But that’s not even the most interesting part.

She was born and reared in the Basque region between France and Spain, but also lived in Moscow as a teen, where her father was artistic director of the Bolshoi Ballet. She attended art school in Dresden and Berlin, studied mime with Marcel Marceau in Paris and even earned a doctorate in astrophysics from the Max Planck Institute in Paris.

She speaks English, French, Russian, German and her native tongue, Euskara, and she has studied circus arts, flamenco and dance and performed all over the world in venues ranging from festivals to refugee camps.

On Saturday, she will treat Islanders to a European-style piece, “A Basquette Quese.”

The show takes place at 5 p.m. Saturday, April 10, at Open Space. Tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for children and can be purchased at Books by the Way, www.brownpapertickets.com and at the door.
