School district wanted a new high school building all along | Letter to the Editor

I note with some interest that there was no room in the June 22 issue of The Beachcomber for rebuttal regarding how the $47.7 million dollar school bond was sold to the Vashon voters. We now know it was politically incorrect to divulge the truth. That is called bait and switch.

There was no need for $47.7 million to remodel a building that is bullet proof. It has withstood earthquake after earthquake. Even architect Brian Carter says that. The idea was to save $20 per square foot over new construction. It is disingenuous to suggest that a new set of buildings is a new idea. It’s what they wanted all along, all steel and glass, reflective of our community. At last night’s meeting, we would get a smaller but just as expensive set of buildings. So much for saving money.

I’d also like to point out the call for construction bids was for remodel not new construction. At the very least, a new construction bid request should be reissued to all firms who applied.

I understand the school board has a lot to chew, but what is it they are being fed?
