Last Saturday was a good day for soccer. The sun shone for the annual Vashon High School boys alumni game, and in the evening Seattle Sounders FC destroyed the New England Revolution 3-0.
Ten Vashon grads returned to their old pitch to take on 12 members of the 2010 team. The grads showed dominance in the series but had to fight back from two tie scores to do it.
Joseph Beytebiere traveled the furthest, from Vancouver, Wash., and made the trip worthwhile by scoring four of the alumni’s five goals.Sergei Serebryakov and Oli Christophersen from the class of 1997 were the oldest grads to make it to this year’s game.
Beytebiere and Christophersen got goals for the alums in the first half, and senior Will O’Neil and sophomore Sam Crosby scored to make it 2-2 at halftime.
In the past the alums have dominated, and even though the game is for fun, were very vocal at the break, vowing that the game would not end in a tie or a loss for them.
Beytebiere scored quickly in the second half to put the alums up 3-2.
Sophomore Walker Merchant was about to score when an alum defender took the ball and scored his own goal, but the result was the same, a 3-3 tie, until Beytebiere scored again.
Senior goalkeeper Robert McGinnis had an amazing half, making spectacular saves, but Beytebiere snuck another ball into the net in the final minute to seal the alums’ 5-3 win and keep their dominance intact.
The boys soccer team held its annual awards party on Sunday in the VHS commons. Players and families enjoyed a potluck meal and a short review of the season.
