As Vashon Allied Arts moves forward on plans for its new arts center, Quartermaster Press, too, is looking to change properties and expand its offerings.
The cooperative printmaking studio founded 16 years ago is currently operating in a space adjacent to a private home, which co-founder Valerie Willson said has put limits on what the studio can do.
Willson said the studio hopes to move into a building on the grounds of the Beall Greenhouses called the Cookhouse. In the larger, more public space, she said, the studio could offer more classes, be accessible to artists at all hours and even draw more members.
“It could be a much more exciting, ongoing thing that come community could be a part of,” Willson said.
Willson said a few local artists have already expressed interest in teaching classes should the studio move into a more suitable location.
“There would be a lot of interesting classes that would work into printmaking in some way or another,” she said.
Willson also hopes that Quartermaster Press, housed in a public place, could participate in studio tours.
This Saturday, the studio will hold a fundraiser at its new location to give people a preview of the building and to solicit funds to remodel and furnish the new space. The transition — including mounting a sink, increasing electrical amperage and constructing shelves — will require $5,500 in one-time startup funds. If the funds are raised, the studio will move in March, Willson said. They have raised about $1,000 so far.
Willson hopes those who are already involved in printmaking on Vashon or who would use the studio’s new offerings will contribute. “It’s really up in the air right now,” she said.
A fundraiser for Quartermaster Press will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, at its new space at 18531 Beal Rd. S.W. To contribute, send a check to Quartermaster Press, c/o Carla Okigwe, 20514 80th Ln. S.W., Vashon, WA 98070.
