After playing to capacity crowds at the Red Bicycle Bistro for the past year, Vashon’s popular comedy/music/variety show is taking its act to a new venue.

For the first time, Church of Great Rain will perform at Open Space for Arts & Community in a special Valentine’s Day performance at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 14.

“We had all kinds of reasons for doing this,” said Greg Parrott, who is the Church’s co-creator. “With well over a dozen band and cast members, we’ve been wanting to see what we can do with a little room to spread our wings.”

The Rev. Hunter Davis, a character played by ensemble member David Godsey, will welcome special Valentine’s Day musical guest Caela and the Dangerous Flares.

The all-female Seattle R&B band will perform with the Church of Great Rain house band during and after the show.

The Holy Roller Radio Players will perform sketches and music around romance and relationships while also premiering a new episode of “Ruraltopia,” their somewhat skewed post-modern vision of Vashon’s future.

“Church of Great Rain is an ever-evolving experience, both for us and the audience,” said Godsey. “At Open Space, we’ll have room for our regular Church-goers, along with all those folks who just don’t venture out on a Sunday evening, or got turned away at the door trying to attend past shows.”

The show has a suggested donation of $5, and beverages and Valentine’s Day sweets will be served.
