Vashon-Maury Island Community Council’s general meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday, June 16, at Courthouse Square.
Fire
The board of Vashon Island Fire & Rescue will hold a meeting at 7:30 p.m. Monday, June 16, in the Penny Farcy Memorial Training Center.
Sewer
The Vashon Sewer District board of directors will hold a meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 19, in the Vashon Senior Center.
Vashon BePrepared
VashonBePrepared’s first annual meeting will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, at the Emergency Operations Center at Vashon Island Fire & Rescue’s Station 55.
The agenda will include a retrospective of the last year’s accomplishments and a look ahead at the organization’s goals for the coming year. The meeting will examine the organization’s finances, plan upcoming meetings and hold elections for the board of directors. The public is encouraged to attend.

Joseph Hill
Islander Joseph Victor Hill was named to the spring 2008 president’s honor roll at Washington State University.
Christina Long
Christina Marie Long of Vashon was named to the spring 2008 president’s honor roll at Washington State University.
Charlotte Skeffington
Islander Charlotte Skeffington, daughter of Jacq and Beverly Skeffington, graduated from Lewis and Clark College on May 11, 2008, with a bachelor of arts degree in international studies and a minor in Latin American studies. She spent the fall of 2006 in the Dominican Republic improving her Spanish and her appreciation for baseball.
Skeffington also found time to serve the greater Portland community through tutoring elementary students in English as a Second Language, coaching a youth softball team, assisting a first-grade class and volunteering with Habitat for Humanity.
Skeffington will be joining the Peace Corps in February 2009 and has been nominated for placement in either Central America or South America in the area of health education.
Ferry system
Multiple vehicle lockout removed
The ferry system has removed the 30-minute lock-out restriction on frequent user multi-ride car and driver passes, which had kept the card or a photocopy of it from being used more than once within a 30-minute period.
Now, families traveling together on the same ferry in separate vehicles can share their multi-ride card — just as they currently share their walk-on tickets. Additionally, customers can scan the same card twice, or make a photocopy of the ticket so the same ticket can be used at the same time by different customers on different routes.

Fire victims
On May 27, former Islander Tanya (Shride) Hartness, currently Tanya Michaels, and her husband Larry Smalley lost their home in Gig Harbor and everything in it after sparks from the panel box ignited and destroyed the home. It took a little more than 10 minutes for the house to be completely engulfed in flames.
Smalley was gone at the time of the fire, and Michaels made it out with nothing but a night gown and her dog Molly. A trust fund has been set up at Washington Mutual to help them get back on their feet. They will need to replace everything from bare bones basics to larger necessities.
Since Michaels was born and raised on Vashon, her family is reaching out to friends, acquaintances and others who would like to help but are unsure how.
The victims and the family will be grateful for any contributions to the fire victims’ trust fund at Washington Mutual.

food bank sale
Northwest Sports
On Saturday, June 14, Northwest Sports in conjunction with Keen Footwear will donate 10 percent of all sales of Keen Footwear to the Vashon Maury Community Food Bank. In addition to regularly stocked items, additional Keen footwear and bags will be available, and a Keen representative will be on hand to answer questions. Information and envelopes for making donations to the food bank will be available.
Northwest Sports is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays.
