The Vashon High School Pirate girls defeated the heavily favored Seattle Christian Warriors last Tuesday, Dec. 11, 43-39, in a game on the home court.
The team also pasted the Chimicum Cowboys 57-35 on Friday, Dec. 14, in a game at Seattle Christian.
The defeat of the Warriors was “a real barn-burner,” said Coach Henry Porter.
The Pirates played a tough back-and-forth 32 minutes at high speed with no letup.
Down by 1 at the half, the Pirates came out in the second half and took control.
The team maintained a 6-to-5-point lead through most of the second half.
As the Warriors broke back to within 1 with less than two minutes to go, junior Zelda Porter drained a 3 and put the Pirates up by 4.
The Warriors answered back with a 3 of their own to get back within 1 when Kelly Costello hit the front of a 1-and-1 to put the Pirates up by 2.
Then the Warriors came down with 15 seconds to go when Porter stole the ball and was fouled.
Porter went to the line and drained her shots to put the Pirates up by 4 to seal the deal.
The Pirates were led by Costello with 11 points, Chrissy Swope with 10, Porter with 8 points and 9 rebounds. Anneli Dolmseth had 7 points and four assists, and Liz Hill had 8 rebounds.
On Friday, the Cowboys (4-0) came out scrappy and took a 13 to 10 lead before Vashon went on a run to lead by 9 at the half.
The Pirates took control at the start of the second half, leading by as many as 25 in the third quarter.
The Pirates were led by Costello with 14, Swope 13, Porter 12, Liz Hill with 9 and Dolmseth with 7.
Vashon heads to Southern California for a tournament over the break before coming back to face the rest of the league.
