A local guitar wizard plays at Nirvana
Vashon Island singer/songwriter Daryl Redeker will play a free acoustic concert from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Nirvana. Redeker has had a long music career, touring all over the country releasing many albums. He has also established himself as a sought-after guitar teacher on Vashon.
The Bike puts on a bluegrassy night
Ya’ll come for a free, all-ages show of homegrown bluegrass and pre-1970s country music at 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Red Bicycle Bistro. Playing that night will be High and Lonesome — a band made up of Tab Tabscott (dobro, pedal steel guitar and vocals), John Schubert (guitar and vocals), Pete Martin (mandolin and fiddle), Al Hutteball (bass) and Rich Jones (banjo, guitar and vocals).
The band got its start back in the roaring ‘80s, traveling the Northwest to play gigs, including the Wintergrass Bluegrass Festival. The group recently reunited and will perform in July at the Darrington Bluegrass Festival.
UMO Ensemble goes brassy
A benefit for UMO Ensemble, “Sassy Brassy Cabaret and Benefit,” will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday at The Hardware Store Restaurant. The evening will include performances by ensemble members and music by the Bucharest Drinking Team, a 10-piece horn band. Stories, anyone?
Save the date for the sixth annual Storytelling Festival, set for 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Methodist church. Tickets, $10 for individuals and $25 for families, are available at Vashon Bookshop and www.brownpapertickets.com.
The event will raise money to support Vashon Wilderness Program’s scholarship fund. The program provides nature immersion experiences for kids ages 4 to 17. More than 400 kids have participated, with almost 40 percent receiving some form of financial assistance.
Hosted by Steffon Moody, the festival will feature storytellers Gene Tagaban, Merna Hecht and Shane Kenode. There will also be complimentary sweet and savory treats, raffle prizes, music by flautist Larry Lawson and more.
