Music at Luna
Café Luna will be brimming with free music this weekend, with acts including an all-acoustic band and a solo performer who plays antique harp guitars.
Marilyn Kay & Company, a group of acoustic musicians, will bring a mix of Americana, bluegrass and classic country to the Café at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20.
Concert organizers said the band “unites tradition with modern sensibilities through the honesty and charm of Marilyn Kay’s original compositions and chilling harmonies.”
At 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, a very different act will take the stage. Timothy Everett Bertsch will play original acoustic compositions on guitars and rare, antique harp guitars.
Bertsch’s music is rooted in jazz, bebop, fusion, flamenco, rock, classical, blues, new age, Celtic, and gypsy music. He has been a member of the rock group Jaded Mary and the jazz group H.D. Fusion.
He has played as a studio musician playing guitar, bass, harp guitar, mandolin and sitar, and he also worked as a private music instructor since 1990.
Koenig gives a gallery talk
Dance ethnographer and cultural specialist Martin Koenig will give a gallery talk about his photography exhibit, “Voices and Images from Bulgaria, 1966-1979,” at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, at Two Wall Gallery and The Shady Lady.
The exhibit is filled with portraits and images captured in Soviet-era Bulgaria, where Koenig spent a decade filming, recording and photographing a traditional way of life that has since been transformed by modernization.
Open Mic is two years old
Vashon’s 8-Word, 8-Day Poetry Open Mic, which takes place on the third Thursday of the month, is nearing its two-year anniversary at Café Luna.
The event offers Island poets a chance to create and share an original poem using eight specially chosen words, which are announced eight days prior to each Open Mic.
At 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, the event will feature two special guest poets, Joe Sutton-Holcomb and Calen Winn, who are Vashon High School students.
Sutton-Holcomb and Winn will not only read new poems, but they also selected the words for this month’s 8-word challenge — quaff, dangerous, philanthropic, friend, insane, lecherous, skulduggery and hilarious.
All Island poets are encouraged to bring an original poem, old or new, or something well-loved by someone else.
New classes in dance and art
Vashon Allied Arts is offering several new art classes.
Teens to adults can learn to draw with charcoal with Rebecca Dvorin Strong in a workshop set for 10 to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 7.
Clay classes for kids and adults, taught by veteran artist Liz Lewis, are being offered from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Saturdays, March 7 and 14.
Dancers can learn to waltz in classes scheduled for three Thursday evenings, starting March 5.
Ray Pfortner will teach teens to adults ways to improve their photographic techniques. The class theme is “Your Island Home,” and participants will have a juried show at The Hardware Store Gallery in June.
