Two Wall seeks political art
The Two Wall Gallery on Vashon Island has announced a call for artists to participate in “Up Against the Two Wall,” a show of politically and socially engaged works.
The exhibit will be held in conjuction with “The Art of Democracy,” a national alliance of art exhibitions that will be shown in October 2008 in cities and towns throughout the United States. More information about the nationwide events can be found at www.artofdemocray.org.
Two-dimensional pieces in all media, including very shallow wall-hung sculptures, are appropriate. Any work with a political or social theme can be submitted, regardless of politics or issue.
Please e-mail images, with framed sizes and a short biography and artist’s statement, to Greg Wessel at SleepingDogCafe@aol.com. If artists prefer to submit slides or a CD, they should e-mail Wessel for a mailing address.
Artists may submit up to five pieces for consideration. Submissions should be received no later than Aug. 1; sooner is better.
Backbone benefit
At 7:30 p.m., this Saturday, June 21, Backbone Campaign will host a benefit concert featuring a long roster of Island performers, as well as a silent auction, at Red Bicycle Bistro & Sushi. The theme of the evening is “Songs of Freedom: People power music across the decades.”
Bill Moyer, Backbone’s executive director, promises music that “continues to inspire us to have the backbone to stand up for our hopes for a better future.”
More than two dozen performers are expected to take the stage to sing classic songs of liberation.
Tickets cost $15 and are available at Books by the Way and Vashon Bookshop. All ages may attend until 9 p.m., after which the event is for ages 21 and older only.
‘Angelic’ Angela Reed at Luna
Cafe Luna will present music by singer/songwriter Angela Reed at 7:30 p.m., Friday, June 20.
Reed’s soulful blend of acoustic rock and pop has been described by critics as “explosive and elegant,” with a voice that is “somehow raw and angelically fluid at the same time.”

Scott Cossu at the Blue Heron
Pianist, composer and recording artist Scott Cossu will bring world-influenced jazz and rhythm and blues to the Blue Heron at 8 p.m., Saturday, June 21. Cossu has played more than 1,000 concerts, composed film scores and produced nearly a dozen albums.
He will be joined on stage by Ann Lindquist, a Mukilteo-based flute player who played on Cossu’s recently released CD “Tides Between Us.”
Lindquist’s repertoire includes jazz, classical, folk, Latin and Middle-Eastern. She has performed concert, alto and bass flute in festivals including the Oregon Country Fair, Bumbershoot and Northwest Folklife.

Zen Jam
A Zen Jam for the solstice begins at 8 p.m. Friday, June 20, at Joan Hanna’s Barn, with improvised music by members of Vashon’s Resonance ensemble. Several spontaneously composed pieces will begin with traditional chanting by members of the Puget Sound Zen Center.
Jason Everett, Chip Lamason and Ken Jacobsen will be joined by a still-to-be-determined percussionist for this event, a fundraiser for the Zen Center, with a suggested donation of $5 to $10.
