Thousands of Islanders lost power Monday after a windstorm with gusts up to 55 mph swept across the region, bringing down dozens of trees and countless limbs.

Power outages were reported Monday afternoon across the Island, starting with the north end, when 1,700 people lost power around 2 p.m., and continuing through the night, said Patti McClements, Puget Sound Energey’s community service supervisor on Vashon.

“It started at 2:15 … and seemed to go from that point all night long — in bits and pieces, all over the Island,” she said.

By this afternoon, a little more than 300 homes along or near Wax Orchard Road and another 120 homes on south Maury Island were still without power. McClements said power was expected to be restored to all those homes later today.

Road crews, meanwhile, were out all night — until early this morning — clearing trees that fell across roads. Jim Didricksen, a Vashon-based supervisor with King County’s Roads Division, said his crews removed about two dozen trees and several limbs that were blocking roads — especially on the south end close to the Tahlequah ferry. Luana Beach Road on Maury was also particularly hard hit, he said.

“It’ll probably take a good week or so to clean it all up,” he said.
