Juried open mics

Vashon Park District is teaming up with Vashon Youth Council and the Vashon High School Literature Journal to present two juried open mic nights this summer. Performances will take place at the Village Green on Monday, July 28, and Monday, Aug. 25.

Performers will be chosen prior to the events by a selection committee comprised of Vashon High School students. Youth who are interested in performing should contact Danny Salonen at 963-6165 (e-mail dsalonen2@yahoo.com) or David Salonen at 920-8890 (e-mail dsalonen@gmail.com).

Summer solstice ceili at the Grange

Vashon Celtic Dance Society will mark the summer solstice by hosting a traditional community Irish ceili dance from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, June 21, at the Grange Hall. The Grange Hall is located at the north end ferry parking lot.

Live music will be provided by Town Cryer, a well-known Seattle-based Irish dance band.

Band members include Michael Graham on accordion, Andrew Anderson on guitar and quatro and Glen Avantggio on fiddle.

Renowned Seattle dancer and caller Kathleen O’Grady-Graham will teach and call the dances. No partners, prior experience or special dancing skills are neccessary.

There is a suggestion donation of $8 or $6 for students and seniors.

For more information, call Shannon Seath Meyer at 774-4047 or Lori Lowrance at 369-9234.

Two-in-one at Café Luna

Café Luna will be the scene of a musical double-bill beginning at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 14.

Jean Mazzei, who performs what she calls “caffeinated folk rock,” will take the stage first and play for about an hour.

Mazzei will be followed by The Might Chakra Jet, a trio comprised of Island bass guitarist Matt Eggleston, flutist and drummer Larry Lawson and guitarist Rod Smith. The trio refers to its musical style as a blend of “high-energy, self-organizing, chakra rockjazzpop at a scintillating, DNA-repairing, A444 hz.”

There is no cover charge.
