Islander Jerry Henley recently donated a small electric truck called a Zap Zebra to the Vashon School District. The truck is currently being used by groundskeepers at all three schools in the district.
The district planned to purchase an electric utility vehicle funded by a levy passed in November 2009, but was grateful for Henley’s surprise donation.
The small, three-wheeled truck can be charged at a station located at Vashon High School.
VHS principal Susan Hanson said the high school hopes to see the solar array on the roof of the B Building one day generate as much energy as it takes to run the new vehicle, making the campus more sustainable and providing a valuable learning opportunity for students.
“We are working hard to be a much greener district,” she said.
