Friends of Maury Island Marine Park and People For Puget Sound will hold a volunteer restoration work party at the Maury Island Marine Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 24.

“We’ll be working to remove pesky invasive weeds like blackberry and Scotch broom,” said Dhira Brown of People For Puget Sound. According to Brown, the former gravel mine has the potential to be a pristine shoreline habitat. The park is located on the southeastern shore of Maury Island. The park’s 1.35 miles of shoreline is bounded by East Passage and is part of the longest stretch of undeveloped shoreline in King County.

Volunteers are welcome to the event, and no experience is necessary, Brown said. The work party will take place rain or shine. Volunteers should wear sturdy, waterproof foot gear, long trousers and long sleeves, since work will be in the weeds. They should bring a water bottle, lunch and their own work gloves if they have them. At the site,

there will be gloves, tools, snacks and water.
