Facing a potential lawsuit, Hilary Emmer on Monday turned over to the Vashon Library three binders filled with her e-mail correspondence from her last several months as a member of Vashon’s community council board.

Emmer said she opted to give the binders to the library rather than to Tom Bangasser, who had requested her correspondence, because if she’s going to relinquish her e-mail, “I want everyone to see it.”

“While I think I’d win in court, I don’t want to take on that battle by myself,” she added.

Bangasser, a current member of the Vashon-Maury Island Community Council’s board, could not be reached for comment.

He has sought Emmer’s e-mail, he has said, because for a stretch she was the sole member of the board, an unorthodox situation that he called illegal. Access to her records, he added, is part of transparency and accountability in government.
