Incumbent 34th legislative district state Democrat representatives Emily Alvarado and Joe Fitzgibbon, whose district includes Vashon, West Seattle, White Center and west Burien, have won re-election by an unsurprisingly commanding margin in initial vote returns, as of Tuesday night.
Alvarado led with around 49,000 votes to Republican challenger Kimberly Cloud’s roughly 8,300. Alvarado held 85.5% of the vote in those initial returns.
Fitzgibbon had a similar margin — carrying about 48,900 votes to Republican challenger Jolie Lansdowne’s 8,900. Fitzgibbon held about 84.5% of the vote.
Votes will continue to pour in over the next few days, but Tuesday’s general election results indicate that Alvarado and Fitzgibbon have already comfortably won re-election in their races. More than half of registered voters’ ballots have already been counted in the race, according to King County elections, meaning it is nearly mathematically impossible for the incumbents to not win.
Voting in Washington has already concluded. Ballots boxes closed at 8 p.m.
Compare Tuesday night’s preliminary results to the primary election back in August this year: Fitzgibbon took about 85.4% of the vote against Lansdowne in that race, while Alvarado earned roughly 86.5% against Cloud.
Updated vote counts will appear in this article later this week, and in print in The Beachcomber next week.
