Step out on First Friday for a night on the town

Check out Steffon Moody, group exhibition “Bookish,” art by The DOVE Project and much more.

Vashon’s First Friday gallery cruise on October 4 will take place starting around 5 p.m. and last until around 8 p.m.

The cruise notably features Steffon Moody’s exhibition, “Iconic Vashon,” at Vashon Center for the Art (see page 1 and below). But be sure to also stop in at local stops to see what’s on offer while you’re out and about, and don’t miss art shows at the following locations in Vashon’s town center.

VALISE Gallery

Members of the VALISE Gallery collective have turned their attention to literature this month, with a group exhibition, “Bookish,” set for an opening reception from 6-9 p.m. on Friday.

Expect references to Kafka, Gogol, Atwood, Bradbury, and T.S. Eliot, as well as childhood icons Dick and Jane, among others. Throw in banned books, the Oxford English Dictionary, and the usual unexpected VALISE surprises, and you’ve got an art show to remember.

Works by Pascale Judet, Robert Passig, Sharon Shaver, Rachel LordKenaga, Stephen Schildbach, Hita von Mende, Bill Jarcho, Lenard Yen, Dot Cherch, George Wright, Jiji Saunders and Gregory Burnham are included in the show.

Regular gallery hours are 1-6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 1-4 p.m. on Sunday. Find out more at valisegallery.com.

Vashon Senior Center

“Light Moments: Photo Club Group Show,” with works by 11 members of Vashon Senior Center’s Photo Club, will be on view from 1-6 p.m. on Friday, with some of the artists in attendance.

DOVE Project

In observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the DOVE Project, at 13211 Vashon Hwy SW, will host an exhibition featuring artist Katy Fiala, whose work reflects hope and healing for survivors.

Swiftwater Gallery

Swiftwater Gallery, at 17600 Vashon Hwy SW, is an artist’s collective boasting more than 50 members, with new works rotating in and out of the gallery monthly. Check out what’s new in the gallery on First Friday.
