Food Bank tour
To ensure that Vashon Food Bank can continue to serve islanders who need food in a safe, accessible, and dignified way, its staff and board have embarked on a journey to relocate to the Vashon United Methodist Church’s property at 17928 Vashon Hwy.
The project will result in a vastly improved food bank, as well as the creation of a community resource hub to better collaborate with other island social service agencies.
Islanders are invited to tour the current and future sites from 2-3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13. Meet at Food Bank’s current location, at 10030 SW 210th St, behind the Sea Mar Clinic. Emily Scott, executive director, will guide the tour and give updates and more details about the project. Bring water, sun protection, and any questions you have. The tour can accommodate 10-15 people. RSVP to minta@vashonfoodbank.org or 206-930-9098.

Picnics and book reading
Vashon Food Bank’s Picnics in the Park program will continue through Friday, Aug. 30, on Mondays through Fridays.
Lunch is served every weekday at Ober Park from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., then at Burton Area Recreation Center (BARC) from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m.
Next week, at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 15, Vashon Library encourages all to grab a picnic lunch and then sit in the sunshine to hear Vashon author/illustrator William J. Zambini (also known as Bill Jarcho) read from his new picture book, “Rhymes and Ditties for Adventurous Kiddies.” Books will be available for purchase and signing at the event.
In case of inclement weather, the event will be held in the Vashon Library meeting room.
The Food Bank’s lunch program provides free, nutritious meals and activities for children of all ages during the summer months when kids don’t have access to school meals. While the target population for the program is the 23 percent of island youth who qualify for free and reduced-priced school lunches, the program provides free lunches for all on Vashon without proof of need.
