Live at Sugar Shack
The Seattle Americana band, Great American Train Wreck, will play an outdoor show at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 7, at Sugar Shack, located at 17636 100th Ave SW. The evening will also feature barbeque and soul food by Good Thyme Catering.
Tickets are $10 at the door.
Dance with Eagles
There will be a two-band rock and roll show at the Eagles, located at 18134 Vashon Hwy SW, on the evening of Saturday, June 15. A lasagna dinner is available for members and guests.
EOS will open the show at about 6:15 and will be followed up by The Duration.
EOS is a group of Vashon musicians that cover legendary rock but also bring their own driving tunes to the stage. What started as a jam session two Saturdays a month with friends and family became EOS — an acronym for “Every Other Saturday.”
Band members include Henry Porter on guitar and vocals, Nano Infante on guitar, Geno Kuhns on Drums, Greg Martin (the younger) on bass, and Zelda Porter on vocals. Bands covered range from Rolling Stones and The Doors, to Grateful Dead and Nancy Sinatra.
Formed in 2021, The Duration’s members include Shawn Carkonen on bass and vocals, Teryn Citino on drums, and Ryan Gray and Kevin Kim-Murphy on guitars.
Mary Poppins
A supercalifragilistic cast of Vashon Dance Academy dancers will take the stage at Vashon High School on June 21-23 for a dynamic performance of “Mary Poppins” — the 27th annual production under the leadership of the company’s artistic director, Cheryl Krown.
Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 21, 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 22, and 1:30 p.m. Sunday, June 23.
Dancers from preschool through high school will bring the tale to life — playing all the classic characters but also everything else from baby birds to kites.
The youngest group of Creative Movement dancers will open the show, while high school senior Kate Spranger and junior Calliope deSmet anchor the group with alternating portrayals of the high-flying nanny. Bert will be danced by Junior Gerrit van Roekel, while the role of Mrs. Banks will be shared by Sabine Jorge and Kate Spranger. The Banks children are danced by Sabine Jorge, Poppy Beck, Lorien Buffington, and Matilda Strain. Isabella Peani will perform as the Bird Lady.
It wouldn’t be a Vashon Dance Academy production without a beloved group of “dancing dads,” who will add their dance skills and comic relief to this year’s show. Students from Modern Dance classes will personify chalk as well as rain in creatively choreographed group numbers, while ballet classes will enjoy taking turns as dolls, nannies and a couple of other surprise characters.
Volunteers have built the set pieces for the show, while other parents and friends of dancers will assist with everything from lighting to costumes to professional theatre experience for the cast.
Remarkably, this is the Dance Academy’s 27th annual production under the leadership of the company’s artistic director, Cheryl Krown.
“We are so excited to once again present a show with our own special twists and surprises to keep the whole family entertained,” said the Dance Academy’s artistic director, Cheryl Krown.
And just as Mary Poppins only promises to stay until the wind changes, this show is one weekend only, with performances at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 21, 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 22, and 1:30 p.m. Sunday June 23.

Come to the cabaret
Post Emporium Productions, a creative troupe based on Vashon, will present a night of dance, song, striptease and spectacle at 6:30 and 9 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, at Snapdragon’s Black Cat Cabaret.
The line-up includes names such as Indigo Love, Brasswax, Just Ducky, and Penny Banks — each one a master of their chosen art form. And for those who enjoy the hypnotic art of belly dance, Maya Krahm, of Bone Deep Bellydance, will grace the stage.
“We aim to create a space where artistry and amusement merge, making for an unforgettable night that will stick with the audience long after the curtain falls,” said Sarah Howard, a.k.a. Vixy Post, producer, and emcee of the show.

Studio Ghibli Festival
Starting on June 25, Friends of Mukai will once again reprise its popular Mukai Studio Ghibli Festival series, scheduled for every two weeks, on Tuesday evenings, in partnership with Vashon Theatre.
The first film in the series, “Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind,” will be shown at 7 p.m.
The 1984 masterpiece by Hayao Miyasaki is the post-apocalyptic tale of Princess Nausicaa, who struggles to unite warring kingdoms amid the chaos caused by environmental destruction.
Adam Foster, founder of the Mukai Studio Ghibli Festival said the festival got its start with an afterschool anime club for kids ages 12-18, at Mukai Farm & Garden.
“The club used anime as a way to learn about Japanese folklore,” he said. “Studio Ghibli’s founder, Hayao Miyasaki drew much of its material from Japanese folk tales.”
Foster also said that Miyazaki’s films have strong, well-written female leads and strong environmental messages.
“‘Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind’ is a good example, because it’s about a princess trying to convince warring tribes of men that the only way to survive environmental destruction is by learning to live in harmony with nature,” he said.
Other 7 p.m. screenings scheduled in the series are “Castle in the Sky” (July 9); “Spirited Away” (July 23); “My Neighbor Totoro” (Aug. 6); and “Princess Mononoke” (Aug. 20).
