The McMurray Middle School track and field team competed in the West Sound League championships, its final event of the season, on Thursday at North Mason High School.

Coach Marilyn Oswald said this year a large number of McMurray students — 70 in all — competed against athletes from all seven West Sound middle schools.

“The kids competed against the best of the West Sound,” she said.

And though the final results and team standings weren’t available at the time of publication, Oswald said McMurray athletes provided some solid performance and there were many highlights that day.

Abigail Kim placed first in the 100 meters, 200 meters and long jump. She also anchored the 4-by-200 meter team to a school record. The team included Annika Hille, Delaney Anderson and Audrey Benner.

Annika Hille placed second in the long jump and first in her heat of the 200 meters.

Audrey Benner had a big wipeout in the 75-meter hurdles, but came back to win her heat in the 200 meter hurdles.

Virginia Miller placed first in the 200-meter hurdles and first in the Turbo Javelin with a school record of 112 feet. The Turbo Javelin is an event for middle school track athletes where throwers use a safer version of the javelin designed for young athletes.

Cici Maasen placed second in the high jump.

Will Zike threw his personal best in the Turbo Javelin and held the school record for five minutes with a throw of 141 feet. However, Simon Perrin shortly broke the school record with a throw of 143 feet. McMurray placed first and second in the event.

Christopher Walker and Dawit Tuller-Ross worked together to place fourth and fifth in the mile, both with a time of 5:12, personal best times for both.

Jane Oswald ran her personal best in the 800 meters with a time of 2:35 to place second.

Katherine Andrus ran on a sprained ankle to win her heat of the 400 meters with a personal best time of 1:07.

Jessica Merritt ran a fast mile and placed fifth.
