The Vashon Maury Chamber Orchestra, led by Karin Choo, will present its fall concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Methodist Church.

Joined by two Island soloists, cellist Rowena Hammill and oboist Irene Alexander Tokar, the orchestra will play works that bookend two centuries of classical music.

An all-American first half includes two pieces from the 1950s: the first movement of Vittorio Giannini’s Concerto Grosso for string orchestra, featuring Karin Choo, Mary Walker, Gaye Detzer and Annie Roberts, and Henry Cowell’s Hymn and Fuguing Tune No. 10 for oboe and strings.

Tokar, who moved to the Island this year and is playing the solo oboe part for this work, studied at the Eastman School of Music and has performed with ensembles throughout the Pacific Northwest.

Hammill, who is artistic director of Vashon Allied Arts’ annual chamber music series, will lead off an all-Haydn second half with the first movement of Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C Major, one of the most beloved concerti in the cello repertoire.

The program will conclude with Haydn’s Symphony No. 45, better known as the “Farewell” symphony.

Selections from the program will be performed for Island kids at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, at the church.

Entrance for the children’s concert is “pay-what-you-can.”

Tickets for the Friday evening performance, available at the door, are $10 general and $7 for students and seniors.
