Dancers set to swirl across the stage in milestone ‘Nutcracker’

This annual production has evolved into a cultural gem for the community.

Now celebrating its 20th year at Vashon Center for the Arts, “The Nutcracker” has become a cherished holiday tradition on Vashon, enchanting audiences with its magical performances and timeless tale.

This annual production has not only stood the test of time but has also evolved into a cultural gem for the community. What makes this production truly special is the dedication and passion of the cast and crew who bring the classic story to life each year.

The cast of dancers, with director Vadne White at the helm, begins preparing in September.

White is exceptionally proud of the Blue Heron Dance Company — the most advanced of Vashon Center for Dance’s students.

“The first time I played the Waltz of the Flowers music this year, they danced the entire piece from beginning to end,” White said. “They took the initiative to work on it in advance of our rehearsal kick-off. I am amazed by this team.”

The return of the Nutcracker crew is always a wonderful reunion of dance dads, alumni, and members of our community who participate for the fun of it. They gather in VCA’s Kay White Hall for two weeks of rehearsals and performances and reconnect over a common bond that is at once nostalgic and new every year.

Over the past two decades, The Nutcracker on Vashon has evolved into a beloved holiday tradition, drawing audiences from near and far to experience the enchanting performances that unfold on stage.

The production’s enduring success is a testament to the dedication of VCA, volunteers, and the community that collaborates to make each performance a memorable and ever-evolving event.

That evolution has included changes to the traditional characters that address cultural appropriation, and dancers in the company have a say in gender portrayal and costuming. As this milestone 20th year unfolds, “The Nutcracker” not only continues to captivate hearts and spread holiday cheer to islanders but will also introduce an innovative addition to its repertoire.

This year, we are starting a new tradition of offering a special sensory-friendly production on Saturday, Dec. 2, inviting individuals of all abilities to enjoy the magic of “The Nutcracker.”

“The Nutcracker” will be performed at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, and 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 2 and 3. Get tickets and find out more at vashoncenterforthearts.org.
