Vashon Allied Arts hosts its annual world music and dance festival at Camp Burton’s outdoor amphitheater Saturday, Aug. 9. Four groups will take the stage, beginning at 5 p.m.
Eduardo Mendonça, founder of the music and dance ensemble “Show Brazil,” will launch the evening with a set of all-original traditional and contemporary Brazilian music.
Mendonça, born in Bahia, Brazil, is a vocalist, composer, percussionist and guitarist. He will be joined by musicians Caxambu and Birch Pereira. The trio features guitar, bass, vocals and percussion.
Mendonça has performed for many notable individuals, including Pope John Paul II and Nelson Mandela.
One World Taiko, Sohoyini African Dance and the Adrian Xavier Reggae Band will also perform.
Shefidgets Catering will sell world-inspired meals. Kara Jones will offer henna body art. The camp is alcohol free.
Tickets cost $12 for VAA members, seniors and students, $14 for general admission and $5 for ages 12 and under. Call 463-5131 or drop by the Blue Heron or Heron’s Nest to purchase them.
The festival is sponsored by Boeing and Vashon Park District, with support provided by Vashon Thriftway, the Washington State Arts Commission and Arts Fund.
