Four-string aficionados, rejoice! Open Space for Arts & Community is proud to present the first-ever Vashon Island Uke Fest at Open Space Sunday, June 11.
The festival includes workshops for all skill levels, an all-day jam, and a concert by Del Rey and Strum in the afternoon.
The festival features a performance and two workshops led by musician Del Rey.
The American Roots Music for Ukuleles workshop, from 10-11:3 a.m., is geared for beginners to be comfortable and confident with first-position chords and able to keep time while changing between them. More advanced levels will also be accommodated.
The next workshop, Fingerpicking the Blues on the Ukelele, will take place from 12-1:30 p.m., and focus on advanced methods for players who are already able to keep a 4/4 beat with their thumb while picking a melody with their fingers.
The festivities will culminate in a concert and jam at 3 p.m., featuring Del Rey and Strum.
Whether you are a seasoned picker or a ukulele neophyte, lovers of acoustic and folk music are sure to enjoy Del Rey’s innovative musicianship as she brings new and well-loved songs to life. Ukulele jams will continue throughout the day.
Del Rey started playing guitar when she was four years old. At 13, she was immersed in the world of folk music, via the San Diego Folk Festival. Her music has a startling complexity — especially when applied to the ukulele. “I try to play the same kind of complicated rhythmic blues and ragtime on four strings as on six. I expect a lot out of the little instrument,” Rey said.
Rags, blues and tunes of the early 20th century are Del Rey’s specialty, even as she writes new music to add to the tradition. She has taught and played all over the world, and brings her distinctive finger-style approach to guitar and ukulele to her teaching DVDs on Homespun “Boogie-Woogie Guitar,” ”The Music Of Memphis Minnie,” “Memphis Uke Party,” and “Blue Uke. Her website is www.delreyplays.com and her albums can be found at hobemianrecords.com.
