Letter to the Editor: Multiple camps cater to developmentally disabled

I am responding to the article “Beba attendees thrive at integrated camp.”

I agree that such a camp serves a particular need on Vashon and am pleased for the leadership of the Mayers.

Islanders may not know there are two additional summer camp programs at Camp Burton for youth and adults with developmental disabilities. Youth New Horizons Camp is a week-long, overnight camp experience for youth ages 13 and older with various disabilities and has been in existence for over 30 years. Incidentally, with trained leader at a ration of 3 campers to 1 leader, the cost this summer is $235.

Camp Burton also hosts a camp for developmentally disabled adults, Camp Parkview. This week-long camp is an outgrown of the Youth New Horizons program and provides an opportunity for aging campers to continue enjoying a camp experience.
