Open Space for Arts & Community is seeking local youth artists to create a public mural as part of its sixth Attention! Artists at Work (AAW) project.

Participating youth artists — to be paid a stipend of $100 each — will have the opportunity to work with mentors and complete their own large panels that together will form a new, patchwork mural at Open Space for Arts & Community’s ORBIT youth center.

The mural, to be unveiled in late April or early May, will remain in place for at least three years.

AAW began in 2020 as a jobs program led by Open Space for Arts & Community in partnership with local nonprofit organizations.

The original goal of the program was to hire artists who were financially impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Past AAW projects include the Mural Project, Distance Dance Project, The Literary Project, The Tiny Fairy House Project, and Create Your Story. All projects sponsored through AAW are free to the public and are designed to be accessible to anyone on the Island.

ORBIT is the all-ages arts and music wing of Open Space for Arts & Community. Established in 2019, ORBIT’s mission is to empower young voices, build community, and create a space for all-ages arts and music.

Ongoing ORBIT programs also include LGBTQIA+ drop-in times, Art Mondays, and Social Music Club.
