A Voice of Vashon (VoV) milestone will take place from 9 a.m. to noon, Friday, Feb. 10, when Michael Whitmore and Shelley Hanna present the 400th episode of VoV’s “Friday Morning Scramble” show.

Starting in late April 2015, in what Whitmore describes lovingly as “the bunker” — up at the old VoV studio on Sunrise Ridge — Michael Whitmore and then co-host Dianne Krouse began the Friday Morning Scramble, spotlighting music from slightly outside the mainstream.

Eventually, they moved into VoV’s warm, windowed, storefront Jean Bosch Studio in the town center of Vashon. And in January 2018, Shelley Hanna took over the co-chair spot full-time, bringing a fresh new game to the show.

The music got more varied — from jazz to soul, afrobeat to funk, R&B to electronica, indie to post-rock.

Segments were added or augmented, like “Cage Match” — where artists or different versions of a song are pitted against each other in brutal smackdowns.

The duo’s most popular morning segment, every Friday morning at 10 a.m. is “It’s Time to Count the Subarus!”

With Kraftwerk’s classic track Autobahn playing in the background, Shelley and Michael count the Subarus driving past the studio for a precise 6 and a half minutes.

The record for Subarus, for those who are curious, is 23, which was recorded last spring.
