Motion that reduced size of VMICC board gets rescinded

The president of the Vashon-Maury Island Community Council said an amendment that reduced the board from nine members to five was done erroneously and must be rescinded.

Tim Johnson, in an email to VMICC’s mailing list Monday night, said he regretted the rescission “but am obligated to do so.” He made the decision after an analysis of the rules by Tom Bangasser, who, along with two others, lost his seat in the board reduction.

At issue is the fact that the move took place by way of an amendment to a proposed bylaw change; that amendment, however, went farther than rules allow. The initial proposal called for reducing the board to seven and was amended on the floor to reduce it to five. But rules don’t allow floor amendments that are more far-reaching than the initial proposal.

“I apologize for the mistake, which was made in good faith,” Johnson wrote.
