Pauline Makie Shiosaki passed away on December 15, 2022 surrounded by her family. She was born on September 10, 1928 in Portland, Oregon to Hideo “Paul” and Nobu (Maekawa) Hayakawa. She was raised in NE Portland, spending her childhood playing and working in the family grocery store and flower shop. She enjoyed summer visits with the Maekawa family in Blanchard, WA and at the Rock Point Oyster Shucking House and Oyster Bar on Chuckanut Drive. During WWII, Executive Order 9066 forced the Hayakawa family to close the grocery. At age 13, she and her family were incarcerated at Tule Lake Concentration Camp in California. Post Internment her family moved to Boise, Idaho. Pauline graduated from Boise High School in 1946 and Boise Junior College 1948. She attended the University of Washington, majoring in administrative dietetics, graduating in 1950. Her first dietician job was at Henderson Camp on Lopez Island. She met Floyd Shiosaki at the University of WA and was married on September 16, 1951. They were married for 65 years at the time of Floyd’s death in 2017.
Floyd designed and built their home in Skyway, Seattle, WA. Pauline enjoyed designing and caring for the garden. Pauline and Floyd raised 3 children, Vicki, Neil, and Gregg instilling a love of the outdoors with gardening, mushroom hunting, shellfish gathering, camping, and scouting activities. Pauline was an accomplished dietician and chef: she was the dietician for many years at Keiro Skilled Nursing Facility; she tested recipes and edited the Puget Sound Mycological Society Cookbook “Oft Told Mushroom Recipes” in 1969, and “Wild Mushroom Recipes”in 1973; instructed Asian cooking classes at Highline Community College; and authored articles and performed food styling for covers of the Northwest Gourmet magazine. Pauline lectured middle school and high school students about her incarceration. She left them with the question, “ will this happen again?” Pauline and Floyd shared time and fabulous meals with friends and family at their beach house on Hood Canal. They moved to Vashon Island in 2004, spending many years attending their grandchildren’s activities rain or shine! Pauline will be remembered for sharing her love of cooking and presentation of food with her children and grandchildren.
Pauline is survived by her children: Vicki Yamamoto (Lori O’Toole) of Los Osos, CA; Neil (Rolanda) Shiosaki of Vashon, WA; and Gregg Shiosaki (Sarah Eskenazi) of La Conner, WA; Grandchildren: Michael (Jho) Yamamoto, Tivoli Shiosaki (Alex Meredith), Jenna Shiosaki, Gabrielle Shiosaki (Chase Olson), Sylvie Shiosaki (Owen Kim), and Mykah Shiosaki; great grandchildren: PJ, Lucina and Maia; and many nieces and nephews.
