What do an opera virtuoso, an antique flying piano, a human ceiling fan, and the world’s largest wedgie have in common?
For one day only, they will all be on stage, as part of the Up Up Up Inc. Crane Truck Circus Show, happening outside at Open Space for Arts & Community, at 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 28.
It’s a show with acrobats, live music, illusions, and many other circus feats performed by performers who aim to leave jaws dropped, heartstrings plucked, and bellies aching with laughter.
The one-hour show, presented by UMO Ensemble at Open Space, features Up Up Up Inc.’s all-star cast of circus artists in a show that is most word-free and suitable for all ages.
Up Up Up tours with a flatbed truck that serves as a stage, complete with a baby grand piano for live music and a 30-foot hand-cranked crane to serve as an aerial rigging point and point of interest for other shenanigans.
Members of Up Up Up Inc., who don’t fit in the truck, tour on bicycles to reduce emissions and increase the fun.
The troupe has played shows for outdoor gatherings, small farms, refugee and immigrant communities, neighborhood block parties, youth empowerment organizations, women’s shelters, and more.
Aligned with the Open Space for Arts & Community’s broader mission to make art accessible to all, Up Up Up believes that circus shows should be accessible to anyone and everyone, regardless of money. Last year, the troupe delighted hundreds of islanders who came to see them perform outdoors on the Great Lawn of Open Space.
“It’s an absolute thrill to once again host an exciting and fun group like Up Up Up Inc.” said producer David Godsey. “They have completely embraced the tradition of wandering performers. Their unique show is a perfect fit for all ages within our community.”
Bring a blanket or lawn chair and stake out a cozy spot. Tickets, $20 for adults and $5 for youth, are available online at OpenSpaceVashon.com.
The event begins at 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 28, at Open Space for Arts & Community. Nobody will be turned away for lack of funds. Please, leave your pets at home.
