Bands battle for affordable housing

This year’s annual fundraiser for Vashon HouseHold (VH), the island’s nonprofit devoted to developing and stewarding affordable housing, will be a Battle of Bands, held from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26, at Dig Deep Gardens, at 19028 Vashon Hwy. SW.

The evening is free to attend, but all will be encouraged to participate in the contest by voting with their pocketbooks for their favorite band. The event includes food for purchase, a silent auction and a raise-the-paddle event. Find out more at vashonhousehold.org.

Havurah hosts community bash

Vashon Havurah will hold its annual community bash and fundraiser, from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 28, on the Havurah grounds, at 15401 Westside Hwy. SW.

The band, Croaker, will perform bluegrass and Klezmer music; the event also will have lawn games, a sprinkler for the kids, Iyad and Safa’s Syrian food truck, other nibbles and a no-host bar.

All are welcome. Tickets, on sale at tinyurl.com/ycy25ka7, are $12 in advance, or $15 at the event. Children younger than 13 are free. All attending are also asked to bring something to donate to a silent auction — a table will be set up to accept and process donations.

NAMI Support Group

NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Friends and Family Support Group will meet in person at the Vashon Presbyterian Church 17708 Vashon Highway SW, and on Zoom on Thursday, Sept. 1, at zoom.us/j/442169680.

This group meets monthly and is intended to help those who have a loved one in their life with a mental health condition. For further information, contact 425-221-1142 or pastorleigh@comcast.net.

‘Winghaven Park’ opens

Vashon’s Drama Dock theatre company will open the regional premiere of “Winghaven Park” on Friday, Aug. 26, at Vashon High School Theater.

The musical is set during the Vashon’s Strawberry Festival of 1944.

“Winghaven Park” is the creation of writer-composer Lisa Peretti, director Kelly Kitchens, musical supervisor Zachary Kellogg and producer Louis Hobson. It tells the story of a glamorous movie star’s return visit to her childhood home and her reckoning with her own unresolved personal history.

The show will have performances on Aug. 26, 27, 28 and 31, and Sept. 1, 2, and 3, at Vashon High School Theater. Find out more and get tickets at dramadock.org.
