August 19, 1932 – May 6, 2022

Ingeborg Fjøsne Herring passed away on May 6, 2022. Ingeborg was born in Oppdal, Norway, in 1932, and raised on a dairy farm. She had many stories about her rustic childhood, the German occupation of her family’s house during World War II, and her seven older siblings. In 1952 Ingeborg came to Seattle intending to visit for one year. She worked as bookkeeper in Seattle, and the aunt she was living with talked her into staying. She attended nursing school in Everett and made life-long friends.

Ingeborg met her husband Tom at a Sons of Norway dance in Seattle in 1958. After many job-related moves Tom and Ingeborg settled on Vashon in 1969. Ingeborg worked full time and raised her children, while also gardening and helping to rebuild an old farmhouse. She knitted, sewed, and was an excellent cook. Ingeborg was an early and active member of the Daughters of Norway Solveig Lodge in Burien, and contributed many batches of lefse for the annual bazaar over the years. She rarely sat still.

Gentle and kind, Ingeborg went quietly through life and seemed happiest with her hands in the dirt, planting and shaping her garden. She had an eye for art and filled her home with beautiful objects from Norway, her many travels, and Vashon artists. She is survived by daughter Roberta Zoryzynski and husband Victor, son John and wife Cheryl Ryder, and granddaughters Katelyn and Marta Herring. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Tom and her Fjøsne siblings Ingeborg, Erik, Marit, Oddlaug, Susanne, Kjerstine and Inger Eline.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Ingeborg’s name may be made to the Vashon Senior Center.
