News Brief: Hit-and-run, sexual assault case awaiting trial

Both cases will be tried in King County Superior Court.

Two separate cases involving Vashon residents are waiting to go to trial in King County Superior Court, according to documentation from the King County Superior Court Clerk’s Office.

Vashon resident Michael Henderson was charged with two felony counts of vehicular homicide and hit-and-run on Tuesday, April 12.

These charges are connected to the death of islander Nathan Dorn Jr., who died walking along the shoulder on Vashon Highway SW on the evening of Monday, April 4 when he was struck by a moving vehicle.

As of press time, Henderson remains in custody with bail set at $100,000.

Henderson will have an omnibus hearing on Aug. 11.

This is a routine pre-trial hearing where Henderson’s defense attorneys and the prosecuting attorney exchange information regarding witnesses to be called, nature of defense, whether discovery is complete and whether further hearings will be necessary.

Currently, Henderson’s trial date is set for Sept. 8. However, according to Casey McNerthney, director of communications at the King County Prosecutor’s Office, if there is a continuance request by the defense that is approved by the judge in the omnibus hearing, the trial date would be changed.

Vashon resident Luciano Alvarado-Fuentes is also awaiting trial in King County Superior Court. Alvarado-Fuentes was charged on Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2021, with third-degree rape, a felony in the state of Washington. The charges were filed after an alleged assault of a 19-year-old woman at a Vashon home.

Alvarado-Fuentes has pleaded not guilty and was released after posting $30,000 bail.

According to court documents, he has an omnibus hearing scheduled on Tuesday, July 12, and Alvarado-Fuentes’ trial date is currently set for Monday, Aug. 22.
