The Vashon wrestling squad qualified a record number of wrestlers for the Tri-State Tournament in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and ended up placing 19th out of 72 teams.

Ten Pirates participated with three making it through to the second day of the two-day event. Becoming only the third champion from Vashon, junior Chase Wickman led the charge and dominated in each match.

Freshman Luke Larson, in his first Tri-State action, finished on the podium with a fifth-place trophy. Junior Logan Nelson rounded out the group with an impressive sixth-place finish in a tough and large bracket.

It was the first time that Vashon had ever had three wrestlers finish in the medals.

Also wrestling for Vashon were Joe Coller, Chester Pruett, Franklin Easton, Preston Petersen, Shane Williams, Hunter Burger and Ellis Petersen.

Coach Anders Blomgren had praise for the team’s performance and dedication, and noted the event provided valuable lessons.

“We go to this tournament to see how we stack up against the best in the West. In turn, we learn what we need to work on for the rest of year — some technical, some mental,” he said.

He added that the team did a great job with its effort and resilience, coming from behind and winning many close matches.

“Every win and bonus point was crucial for us to place in the top 25 and thus qualify a full team for next year,” he said.

Blomgren added that the team’s belief and daily effort is showing dividends and will continue to do so exponentially if members keep their focus until February.

Blomgren also singled out Wickman, as  the team’s third champion,  noting the team now has 10 Tri-State medalists.

The annual Rock Tournament was held yesterday at the Vashon High School gym after press time.

The wrestler will travel to the Everett Classic Tournament on Jan. 3.
