Last Saturday a small but determined group of Islanders set out to bring new life to the walls of the indoor skate park at the Burton Adventure Recreation Center.

Susan McCabe, Vashon Park District’s program coordinator, said the volunteers, led by Island artists Simon Hathaway-Spurlock — who created the original design more than a decade ago — and Marcus Fellbaum, repainted the existing art on about half the walls and painted brand new art on the other half.

“It’s a little softer and more playful,” McCabe said, adding that there are still a few blank spaces if any more artists want to contribute.
