Larson & Karasick
On Nov. 3, 2007, Mica Michelle Lawson and Matthew Steven Karasick joined hands in marriage at The W Hotel in downtown Seattle. Lawson is the daughter of Kathy and John Pierce of Sammamish and Vashon and Mike Lawson of Vashon.
Karasick is the son of Martha and Frank Karasick of Cherry Hill, N.J.
The couple owns a home in Magnolia but will be living in New York City for the next two years while Karasick completes a work assignment.

Mildred Rhind
Mildred Ahrenius Rhind died peacefully at Vashon Community Care Center on June 25, 2008, after a very long, full life and a short final illness.
Rhind was born in 1909 and lived most of her life in West Seattle. Her life reflects the changing role of women in the 20th century. In the 1920s she was a flapper; she danced the Charleston on roller skates for a Pathe newsreel and drank bathtub gin.
Rhind attended West Seattle High School (class of 1927) and afterward started her long career with the Union Pacific Railroad. She began as a switchboard operator and ended as a ticket agent at the downtown Seattle office when she retired in 1969.
Following her retirement from the Union Pacific, Rhind had a second career working part-time for Washington Mutual Savings Bank in the school savings department.
Throughout the Great Depression, she hid her first marriage to avoid a railroad policy of not hiring married women. After World War II, she refused to give up her job to accommodate veterans returning to the workforce.
In 1950, Rhind married the love of her life, Orville Horace (Bill) Rhind. In the 1950s, she had her first and only child and continued her career, so she and husband and son could have a dual income and enjoy boating. Their marriage lasted until her husband’s death in 1970.
Over the years she was a member of Eastern Star, Peace Lutheran Church, Tyee Yacht Club, the Ladies Auxiliary of the Swedish Club and the West Seattle Garden Club. Rhind is survived by her son, William Rhind (partner, John Coleman) her brothers Oliver Ahrenius (Evelyn), Chuck Ahrenius (Joan) and many nieces and nephews.
Her motto in life — “Smile, say yes and do what you damn well please” — served her well, until the very end. Rhind will be greatly missed.

Kirsten Ruth Bachant of Vashon earned a bachelor of science degree in general studies – biological science from Washington State University in the spring 2008 semester.
Siri Hiltz
Siri Anne Hiltz, a 2005 Vashon High School graduate, earned highest honors on the dean’s list at McDaniel College in Maryland.
Highest honors go to students with GPAs of 3.9 or higher. Hiltz, the daughter of Tammy and Ken Hiltz, will graduate in 2009.
Katie Wilson
Katie Rose Wilson of Vashon earned a bachelor of arts degree in communications from Washington State University in the spring 2008 semester.

sheriff’s report
June 12
12 p.m.: A reporting party told a King County Sheriffs deputy he’d seen a hit-and-run in the Vashon Thriftway parking lot earlier in the week. The party said he had written down the license plate numbers of the two vehicles involved and asked if the sheriff would like that information. The sheriff told the party to forward him that information.
June 18
7:20 p.m.: A deputy was dispatched to a residence in the 10100 block of 97th Avenue S.W. A reporting party called claiming that she had found a gun in her son’s room and wanted someone from the police department to come pick it up. The handgun was stolen property.
June 20
9:25 a.m.: In the 9700 block of S.W. 204th Street, someone vandalized two school buses, cutting a hole in a rear fence of the school bus parking lot before shattering windows on the buses.
11 a.m.: An individual called to report that an unknown person had thrown a brick through four windows of Vashon Island Energy, located at 20317 Vashon Hwy S.W. There are no suspects or witnesses. This appears to be one of several incidents of vandalism to commercial properties reported on June 20.
11:30 a.m.: As the deputy was taking a report for bricks thrown through windows at Vashon Island Energy, an individual walked across the street to report a rock had been thrown through a front office window at Sound Food and Café, located across from Vashon Island Energy at 20312 Vashon Hwy S.W. There are no suspects or witnesses.
June 23
5:30 a.m.: A deputy spoke with a victim who told him an unknown person broke both the windows on the passenger side of his parked and locked vehicle with a rock. The vehicle was in the Ober Park Park and Ride lot. Once inside the car, the suspect attempted to punch the ignition to steal the vehicle but was unsuccessful.
10 a.m.: In the 11800 block of S.W. 256th Lane, a victim reported fraudulent activity on a checking account after noticing unauthorized purchases on the account statement. The purchases were made using the account’s debit card number. The purchases were primarily made in the Scottsdale, Ariz., area.
