Take a stand for peace in Ober
A group of women will hold a peace memorial at Ober Park at noon on Mother’s Day, May 11, for 15 minutes. Participants are asked to stand in silence for peace. Bring bells to ring while gathering and departing.
Women of all ages are welcome, and so are the men who support them in the global effort to “be peace.” For more information, contact Deacon Sally Carlson of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit at 463-6533. The event is sponsored by the organization Standing Women, which promotes peace.
Register for Bill Burby Fun Run
Registration for the Bill Burby Inspirational 10K/5K Fun Run and 5K Walk is now open. The run and walk will start at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 12. It is an annual part of the Strawberry Festival and a great way to kick off the day before downing a plate of Kiwanis pancakes and watching the parade, according to organizer Susie Kalhorn.
This year’s run is sponsored by Northwest Sports, Vashon Rotary, Kiwanis Club of Vashon and Vashon Windermere Real Estate.
In addition to commemorating Bill Burby, the race will honor Vashon Island Junior Basketball’s contributions to Island athletics.
Proceeds from the race support varsity sports at Vashon High School and the Vashon Community Scholarship Fund.

PSE office reopens
The Puget Sound Energy (PSE) office on Vashon Highway just south of S.W. 180th Street opened yesterday and will offer customer service and energy efficiency advice.
The office had been closed since the late 1990s, when PSE shuttered the building to save money, said Davina Gruenstein, a spokesperson for the company. But Islanders missed the “face-to-face interaction” with employees, she said, so the electricity and natural gas company has reopened its newly remodeled Vashon office.
Residents can set up new accounts or cancel current ones, pay bills, change their address or speak with an “energy advisor” about making their home more energy efficient. There will be a computer station and a conference room open to the public, Gruenstein said. Customers can also schedule an energy audit for their home.
The office, located at 18125 Vashon Highway S.W., is open from 9 a.m to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. A grand opening celebration will be held June 12.
