King County plans to hold a public meeting next week to discuss its application for $400,000 in federal funds from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to help address pollution at the former Glacier site on Maury Island.

If successful in obtaining the money, called a Brownfields grant, the county will use the funds to help with soil assessment and remediation at the former gravel mine, which was in the pathway of the arsenic-laced plume from the ASARCO copper smelter.

The county, however, has to hold a public meeting in advance of receiving the grant, said Doug Williams, a spokesman for the county’s Department of Natural Resources and Parks.

While it’s unusual to hold a meeting in advance of a grant, Williams noted in an email, “This is a good thing. It’s not every day we have the opportunity to get $400,000 in grant funding.”

The meeting will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Land Trust Building.
