Despite six inches of rain in the first two weeks of March, the enthusiasm of the Vashon High School track and field team was not dampened.

With 34 athletes this season, this all-weather team is still looking for their all-weather track to host a meet at VHS. Until then, the traveling road show will continue.

The first stop of the year was last Thursday at Charles Wright Academy, where the young Pirate team competed against Charles Wright, Chimacum High School, Cascade Christian High School and the non-league girls’ Annie Wright School. It was many of the Vashon athletes’ first meet ever.

Charles Wright won the girls’ meet with 103 points. Cascade Christian earned 101, Annie Wright had 61, Chimacum had 30 and Vashon had 12.

Chimacum placed first for the boys with 80 points, followed by Charles Wright with 58.5, Cascade Christian with 51.5 and Vashon with 30.

Vashon’s Landon Summers placed second in the high jump and the 110 high hurdles, and won the 300-meter hurdles in 47.59.

Aidan Cyra took first in the 3,200 meters, stopping the clock at 11:15, and Colin Andrus set his own personal record in the mile at 4:55.

Two state competitors returned to the track team for the 2011 season: James Spencer, who competed in the 400 meters at state, and Tyler Stoffer, who competed in the high jump and placed seventh overall in the 110 high hurdles. Both athletes are seniors this year.

The Pirates’ next meet is at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, March 24, at Orting High School. They will compete against Orting, Cascade Christian and Chimacum.
