Local photographer, artist opens framing business

New frame shop comes to Vashon.

If you pass by Parker Plaza, you’ll notice a new business. Vashon Island Framery, owned by local artist and photographer Victoria Hunter, has recently opened its doors.

“There was no frame shop on the island for the last year, and I know there is a big need for one,” said Hunter. “So I felt that it was a good time to start one.”

Hunter, who has lived on Vashon for the last eight years, had always been interested in framing.

“I learned basic matting through my studies at the Photographic Center Northwest over in Seattle,” said Hunter.

She then went on to study with professional framer Sandra Landes in Dorena, Oregon, who has been framing for “decades and decades.”

“I love being able to help preserve people’s art or special objects, or whatever they want to frame,” said Hunter. “I like that it’s going to be taken care of for the next decades to come.”

Hunter also uses conservation methods in her framing work to ensure her customer’s work is protected. For example, Hunter’s materials are acid-free, use UV blocking glass and reversible mounting techniques.

Vashon Island Framery is currently open by appointment only and is located at 17232 Vashon Hwy SW. For additional details, visit vashonislandframery.com.
