Letter to the Editor: Softball has been on Vashon Island for nearly 10 years

In response to the article about the “new league” of girls’ fastpitch on Vashon, I want to say that fastpitch has been available for girls for nearly 10 years.

There were several years where the league was strong and vibrant with girls playing for several years on teams that moved up and grew as a group. That said, we are now thrilled that the league has come back into a strong presence.

I want to send a shout-out to some people I know have worked hard and been passionate about girls’ fastpitch over the years: Matt Amundson, Chris and Shanon Browne, Jen Sullivan, Tim Kraabel, Larry Dubois, Lauri Hennessey, Lee Ockinga, Scott Durkee and Lance Morgan, to name just few who put in many years trying to make this league what it is today through coaching and other avenues.

My daughter plays on the U12 league and has been playing fastpitch since she was 9 years old. She is now in sixth grade. She also played in second grade. The team she plays on now has been together for three years, and they have played off-Island, traveling to West Seattle once a week.

This year they have a winning record and are off to a successful tournament playoff where they have won their first game and are moving up the ladder.

Thanks to everyone who has put in time and energy over the last 10 years to make this program a success. It has been a long road with many hands in the pot. The girls thank you.

Finally, welcome to all the new “fastpitch moms and dads” — we are thrilled to have you “on the team.”
