Yaani Drucker

Yaani Drucker has spent 25 years researching the underlying cause of conflict and injustice in the world and would like to share her findings and engage Islanders in a meaningful discussion on the problem and the solution in a weekend intensive called “Planetary Enlightenment and You.”

Her sources are Sai Baba (an Indian yogi), “A Course In Miracles” and The Bible. She will speak about her belief that ego is the root of conflict.

Everyone is welcome to this free workshop, which will be from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, June 27, 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Saturday, June 28, and 10 a.m. to 4 pm. Sunday, June 29.

Build rock walls

Dig Floral & Garden will host the free class “Rock Walls” at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 29.

This class is for those who have ever fantasized about building a stone wall. Participants will explore the wide variety of uses for natural stone — from rock walls to pathways. Hands-on techniques, tips and tools will be discussed and demonstrated.

Permaculture

“What is Permaculture?” will meet at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 29, at the Vashon Library and will be presented by Julianne Jaz.

Jaz will discuss the basis of permaculture, which is to design environments to become more self-sufficient and to reduce human consumption. It is a holistic approach to creating a household that supports natural ecosystems.

Men eat for health

Inflammation is a factor in most chronic conditions, including hypertension, arthritis and diabetes. Diet can effectively reduce inflammation and the problems it causes.

In an upcoming class, participants will learn why some foods quiet inflammation while others increase it. Eating to quiet inflammation provides significant benefits that include a relatively effortless weight loss (if needed), improved sleep and reduced aches and pains.

A new class for men only begins at 6:30 p.m. Monday, June 30, and runs for five consecutive Mondays. Advance registration at The Vashon Island Coffee Roasterie is required. The cost is $75.

Farmers Market

The Vashon Farmers Market will be open in the Village Green from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 28. Long-time Islander and beloved folksinger John Browne will play music and sing between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Farmers will have lots of salad greens, broccoli, peas, onions, fresh herbs, milk, eggs, cheese, meats, cut flowers and more.

Tiny’s Organic Farm of Eastern Washington is expected to bring cherries and other fruits.

There will be lunch soups, hum bows and more from Sol Source and a wide variety of Island-produced crafts.

The master gardener clinic will meet from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 28, outside of True Value.

Library late night

LateNight @ the Library featuring The Pharmacy will meet at the Vashon Library from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, June 28.

The Pharmacy will play outdoors in Ober Park at 7 p.m., and everyone is welcome to this part of LateNight.

Guitar Hero and Dance Dance Revolution open play will be available in the library as usual. Kids can surf the Web or play a game. The library will be open only to students entering grades six through 12 in the fall.

Zen

practice

The Puget Sound Zen Center will hold a day of Zen practice on Vashon Island from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 29. The retreat will be held in the north end Kudus House.

Mosquito fleet reading

Island author Jean Cammon Findlay and co-author Robin Paterson will read from and sign “The Mosquito Fleet of South Puget Sound” at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 29, at the Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Museum.

The book features hundreds of historic photographs of the steamships that served Vashon and Maury islands and nearby communities from the 1850s to the 1920s.

Music for kids

“Ladybug One” presented by Harmonica Pocket will be at the Ober Park building at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 29.

Gospel choir forms

Islanders are invited to join the “Gospel in the Park” choir at Bethel Church.

Rehearsals will be held at Bethel from 7 to 8:30 p.m. beginning Monday, June 30 and continuing July 1, 3, 7, 8 and 10.

The group will sing at Ober Park betweem 1:15 and 2 p.m. Sunday July 13, for the Strawberry Festival crowd.

Historic roads

Islanders can learn about some of King County’s oldest and most scenic roads from 7 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 1, at the Vashon Heritage Museum, 10105 S.W. Bank Rd.

King County Roads, 4Culture and the County’s Historic Preservation Program have researched dozens of roads in unincorporated King County. Three roads on Vashon and Maury Island are being considered as heritage corridors: S.W. Cedarhurst Road, Westside Highway and Dockton Road.

Brown Bag Story Time

Flea circus

“The Amazing Flea Circus and Magic Show,” presented by Payne Fifield, will be at 7 pm. Monday, July 7, at the Vashon Library for kids ages 5 and up.

Kids will watch the death-defying acts performed by Professor Payne’s Performing Fleas. They’ll witness amazing feats of daring-do performed by Hercules, the world’s strongest flea; Marceau, the world’s only mime flea; and Fearless Flambeau as he is shot out of a cannon.
