Corps extends Glacier comment

The comment period on the draft Environmental Assessment for Glacier Northwest’s proposed mine on Maury Island has been extended one week to March 17.

Muffy Walker, head of the regulatory branch at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, said she made that decision after receiving more than 50 requests for an extension.

The draft is available at www.nws.usace.army.mil under the heading “Links of Interest” and at the Vashon Library.

The Corps says it will consider comments it receives by both conventional mail or e-mail and will include them as part of the public record. E-mail comments must originate from the author’s own e-mail account and must include in the subject line the permit applicant’s name and reference number: Northwest Aggregates, NWS-2000-1094-SO. Conventional mail comments must also include the applicant’s name and reference number.

WSF chief to visit Vashon Island

Paula Hammond, the state secretary of transportation, and David Moseley, the new director of Washington State Ferries, will attend a special Vashon-Maury Island Community Council meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 20.

Hammond will address the top 10 Islander concerns about ferries. 

Islanders are invited to send their concerns, along with a paragraph explaining why their concern is important, to kulatoski@centurytel.net or drop them off at The Beachcomber office no later than Saturday, March 1.

Meanwhile, the community council’s Transportation Committee needs volunteers to work on several issues, including the passenger-only boat, bus connectivity on and off Island and King County roads.

Weiss to speak about justice

Rabbi Zari Weiss will speak about her Center for the Pursuit of Justice, called Rodef Tzedek, at 7 p.m. today, Feb. 27, at Havurat Ee Shalom. Weiss is interested in the intersection of Judaism and the pursuit of justice and recently launched Rodef Tzedek: The Center for the Pursuit of Justice.
