Roy passed away peacefully
at age 94 with his son and
daughter at his side on Sep.
16, 2020. He now joins his wife
Peggy, who passed away in
2012 (they were married for
62 years). They met and were
married in Clyde, Texas, in 1949.
Roy was born in Christiana,
Jamaica, on March 13, 1926.
At age 16 Roy joined the Royal
Air Force in England during World War II and assisted
with the loading of British bombers and gliders on
D-Day in 1944. In 1948 Roy came to the USA and
joined the US Army. In August, 1950, he was among
the first US troops sent to the Korean War, where he
was seriously wounded and was awarded the Purple
Heart. He was later part of the Field Artillery Battalion
that fired the first atomic projectile from an atomic
cannon in 1953 at Frenchman Flats, NV.
He served in the US Army as a Missile Radar Specialist
until 1964, and then he worked for the Department
of the Interior, the National Weather Service, and the
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
(NOAA) in the Seattle area, where he retired in 1990.
He and Peggy moved to Gold Beach on Vashon Island,
WA, where Roy was heavily involved in restoring and
showing Ford Mustangs.
Roy is survived by his son Dwight Newman (and wife
Debbie), daughter Diane Thompson (and husband
John), grandchildren Cory and Ryan Newman, Cyndi
and Steven Thompson, Will Kinson and Kim Jones, and
six great-grandchildren.
