Community council elects new officers

Jake Jacobovitch, who served as president of the Vashon-Maury Island Com-

munity Council (VMICC) board nearly a decade ago, was elected to helm the volunteer organization at the first meeting of the newly elected nine-member board Monday night.

He ran unopposed for the position.

Carl Sells, meanwhile, was elected vice president over Tom Bangasser, in a five-to-three vote. AnnaLisa LaFayette, running unopposed, was chosen to serve as secretary. Doug Skove, in a five-three vote, was elected treasurer over Bangasser.

No one was elected to serve as the clerk; each board member nominated declined to run for the position.

Jacobovitch, noting why he wanted to serve as the board’s president, said he was concerned about how “loose” the council has gotten over the last several years. “I hope to bring it together, make it more cohesive, and therefore have a bit more clout,” he said.

“I’m a structure guy,” he added. “I have no agenda.”

The council’s previous board resigned en masse five months ago after learning from King County officials that it likely would have to comply with the Public Records Act, a far-reaching measure.

At the board’s first meeting, Lauren Smith, a county official, gave the newly elected board members a primer on the law, noting that as long as they’re deliberate about VMICC business and keep records organized, “It’s not a scary thing.”
